Is it possible to sign a lease for 6 months rather than 12 months?

Is it possible to sign a lease for 6 months rather than 12 months?

Theoretically it is possible to sign a lease term as long or as short as you like - provided that the landlord agrees to it. Nevertheless, there is always the problem is that landlords seek the longest lease term possible, and if there are any parties interested in the property other than yourself, even if they are offering less money, you can be very sure that the landlord will almost always take the longer term lease over the short term one. It is standard practice for a landlord to repaint a property between tenants and therefore a short-term lease may make it difficult for the landlord to justify such expenditure.

It is recommended to sign a 12-month lease, and should you find that you need to move out prior to the lease expiration, and provided that your agent has included a relevant clause in the lease, you should be able to find someone quite easily to take over or re-sign the lease without incurring any penalty.
