April 31, 2005 – On Monday, April 31, 2005, a select group of MBA students from the esteemed Richard Ivey School of Business (University of Western Ontario, Canada) met with Edward Lehman regarding the protection of Canadian and United States' patents while manufacturing in China. Ivey School of Business' MBA program was ranked 34 th in the world by Financial Times, and #1 in Canada by Business Week and the Wall Street Journal. The group requested a special meeting with the Managing Director, asking his advice for their case project. Mr. Lehman outlined the basic considerations necessary to enter the Chinese market, then addressed their specific concerns. As usual, the group appeared thoroughly impressed with the knowledge the American lawyer has built up over his years in China, not simply with regards to the law, but business in general. To summarize his advice to the group- if a company wants to do business in China, its principals must have a belief in the IP system, as a defensive stance, through the division of work processes or other non-legal means, will provide little protection within the Chinese markets. Simply put, take an offensive stance and register all Intellectual Property on China entry. To learn more about our firm, please visit us at
